The roof on a gambrel shed has 4 roof planes. This roof design give the loft area under the roof a lot more room than a regular shed roof. The loft in our gambrel shed provide almost double the floor space, with the only limitation being the access area to get up into the loft area. This gambrel building has a main area of 48’ x 60’ with 18’-wide sheds, one of which serves as a small entry area and courtyard. Another shed contains two roomy offices and a storage unit. The barn’s center has a large hot tub and exercise area and room for four vehicles with an indoor wash station. When winds blow against the side of a gambrel roof forces are transmitted to those splices. The unbraced gambrel roof is unstable compared to a properly constructed gable rafter roof with rafter ties at the wall stud tops. Gable rafters plus rafter ties produce a triangle. A triangle is inherently stable, resists deformation by outside forces.

The roof is NOT flat (small pitch, not sure how many degrees), and there is an attic that I can get to and almost stand-up in (so pretty large). Right now the roof top is the same as the sides, shingles (falling apart), and I plan to put new IKO 50 year fiberglass shingles on - would have loved metal but can't afford it.
